Social media usage grows by 8%

The use of various social media is still growing: a recent survey has revealed that over 19% of internet users now say they use a social media service such as Facebook or Twitter to share updates about themselves or to see updates about others.

This is a substantial increase in the number of users accessing social media – in previous surveys from December 2008 and April 2009 the percentage was just 11%. Furthermore the report by Princeton Survey Research International matches the growth expectations of the two major social networking companies, Twitter & Facebook.

According to leaked internal documents which were uncovered earlier this year, the micro-blogging site Twitter expects to have over 25 million active users by the end of 2009, rising to 100 million by the end of 2010 – with aid from a lot of media exposure this year and an ever growing following of high-profile celebrites, this might be possible, as Twitter is looking less and less like a short-lived fad. Facebook, on the other hand, already has according exceeded its targets this year with figures stating 300 million active users, producing 45m status updates a day.

In the future it will become even harder to measure use of social, as from this year onwards a lot of social platforms began to connect deeper and deeper with status updates fed from Twitter into Facebook and vice-versa.
