Google develops music service
The technology website TechCrunch stated on their blog that they had heard from “several sources” that search engine giant Google had spent the last several weeks negotiating with music providers and record labels to secure content for the launch of their new major music service. However they admitted the sources were unclear on whether the new service dubbed “Google Audio” by some and “Google Music” by others; was about streaming music, downloading music or both.
TechCrunch later posted another statement saying that the music service would also feed music links and song details into relevant search results and would provide users with the means to buy music. Again this was unclear whether this would be from partner’s websites or Google itself. Sources have also made it clear that “Google Audio” will be an entirely new service, completely independent from the firm’s music download service that was launched in China last year.
In related news, this week it was revealed that the Swedish music sharing website Spotify is being included in a new tariff and handset offer with mobile phone provider 3 and HTC – it will run on the new Android system provided by HTC. In its launch year Spotify has gone from strength to strength, at the recent T3 gadget awards in London it picked up the award for best innovation of 2009 and was commented on having a “superb interface”, “massive tune selection” and was “seamlessly smooth”.
