British Internet Users Spend Nearly A Day Online Per Month!

The UK Online Measurement (UKOM) company has recently revealed that broadband internet users in the UK spend on average 22 hours and 15 minutes surfing the internet every month. That’s a 65% increase in three years!

Social networking and blogs take up most of the time spent online (a staggering 22.7%), and users have shifted focus away from other internet activities such as instant messaging which has dropped from 14% (in 2007) down to 4.9%.

Social networks websites such as Facebook and Twitter now hold a significant influence in many areas of everyday life, including playing a role in the recent General Election.

Time Spent Online:

  1. Social networks/blogs - 22.7%
  2. E-mail - 7.2%
  3. Games - 6.9%
  4. Instant Messaging - 4.9%
  5. Classified/Auctions - 4.7%
  6. Portals - 4%
  7. Search - 4%
  8. Software info/products - 3.4%
  9. News - 2.8%
  10. Adult - 2.7%

The UKOM Spokesperson, Alex Burmaster told BBC News that social networking, online gaming and communications are still the most popular internet pastimes and that “These are the pillars on which the internet [is] built”

"[Social networking] is like an organism, feeding off itself and getting bigger. People are plugging more and more of their lives into it," he went on to say.
