Bing Attempts To Overthrow Google

Microsoft’s recently launched search engine; Bing, is emerging as a worthy challenger to the dominance of Google, after capturing over ten percent of the US market since its launch in June.

Microsoft’s ‘decision engine’ is growing faster than any other search engine in the United States of America, with a 22.1% month-on-month increase in August, compared to Google’s increase of only 2.6%; according to the latest research published by Nielson. These figures show that Bing now controls 10.7% of the search engine market, with over 1.15 billion searches performed on its combined sites (Windows Live, Bing & MSN) in July.

In the three months since the launch date, Bing (billed by Microsoft as a decision engine), has continually strived to demonstrate that it is a enhanced alternative to the traditional “ten blue links” provided by other generic search engines and that their search engine is much more focused at assisting users to make practical choices about their online searches. One of the features that has been incorporated into the Bing infrastructure is Visual Search which offers thumbnail images as an alternative to the ten hyperlinks offered by other engines.

Google is still the dominant force in the search engine world with a controlling share of 65% of the market, but as Microsoft are continually incorporating new functions into their ‘decision engine’, retaining their market supremacy may be difficult.

The United Kingdom looks to be one of the next major targets for Bing according to director Stefan Weitz, it won’t be easy though as Google completely dominates the search engine world in the United Kingdom with a market share of 90%.
